What it costs has two parts: the advertised fee, and the exchange-rate margin kept by paying your recipient less than the mid-market rate. The margin is usually the larger, and is never labelled as a fee. Figures are each provider’s published terms, plus bank-transfer quotes from the Wise Comparison API, a source operated by a company this site also ranks — open a provider for a live quote. Recipient amounts are shown only for the providers we hold a checked figure for, which is some of those listed here rather than all of them.

Ordered by the amount the recipient receives, highest first, across every provider we hold a checked figure for — then by payout coverage, delivery speed and published fees. Affiliate arrangements never affect this order.

What these figures are

What the recipient gets
Collected from the Wise Comparison API at a send amount of £1,000, October 2026. These price a bank transfer. Cash pickup and mobile wallets are priced differently and are not covered by these figures. Not a live quote — rates move daily.
Markup against mid-market
Measured against the row the Wise Comparison API flagged as being at the mid-market rate — Wise’s, October 2026. That is a provider listed in this table, which is why it is named, and why its own row shows no markup figure.
Fees
As each provider publishes them, via the Wise Comparison API, October 2026. A provider that does not publish a fee for this corridor shows none rather than a guess.
Payout methods, delivery speed, promotions
Read from each provider’s own pages for this corridor and last reviewed October 2026. Where a provider’s own sources disagree, the disagreement is printed rather than resolved.

Independent — providers cannot pay for placement or ranking · Consistent — every checked amount measured on the same corridor at the same send amount, and any fee quoted on a different basis says so on its own row · Transparent — the advertised fee kept separate from the rate margin

How money arrives in India

True of India whoever is sending, so it is researched once and shown on every corridor that ends here. Nothing on this list is a price.

IFSC code

Money sent to an Indian bank account is addressed with the recipient's account number together with their branch's IFSC code. NPCI lists account number plus IFSC as one of the ways a payment can be addressed, alongside a UPI ID. — National Payments Corporation of India, September 2026

Ways it can arrive

Bank deposit
Under the Reserve Bank of India's Money Transfer Service Scheme, anything above Rs.50,000 must reach the recipient by account-payee cheque, demand draft or payment order, or be credited directly to their bank account. — Reserve Bank of India, Master Circular on the Money Transfer Service Scheme, September 2026
UPI
UPI is an instant payment system developed by the National Payments Corporation of India, an RBI-regulated entity. A recipient can be paid at a UPI ID in the form xyz@upi rather than by account details. — National Payments Corporation of India, September 2026
Cash pickup
The Reserve Bank of India permits up to Rs.50,000 to be paid in cash to a beneficiary in India under the Money Transfer Service Scheme. Above that, cash is not an option. — Reserve Bank of India, Master Circular on the Money Transfer Service Scheme, September 2026

Quick verdict: the best way to send money to India

Each line names the provider that leads on one specific need, and why. There is no single winner because there is no single question — the lowest fee and the fastest delivery are rarely the same provider.

Chosen by the same rules that order the table, from each provider’s published terms. A need with no clear leader is left out rather than handed to whoever happens to be first.

How much you send changes which provider is cheapest

A transfer costs two things: a fee you can see, and a cut of the exchange rate you cannot. They scale in opposite directions, so the best provider for £200 to India is often not the best provider for £5,000.

Up to £2,500, Wise costs least on this corridor. From £5,000 upwards, Western Union does.

Every row was priced separately at that amount — the fee and the rate margin in each are the ones that applied to a transfer of that size, not one measurement stretched across the range. Cost is the fee plus the margin, for a bank transfer, across the 3 providers priced here; other providers on this corridor may be cheaper and are not priced this way. The margins were measured by Wise’s comparison service, not stated by the providers themselves, and Wise is a provider this site ranks. Checked October 2026. Cash pickup and mobile wallet payouts are priced differently and are not what this compares.

Over £1,000

The exchange rate is most of what you pay

The fee stops mattering and the rate takes over. Half a percent on £5,000 is £25 — five times a typical fee, and no provider calls it a charge. A zero-fee offer on a large transfer is the one most worth checking.

None of the providers on this corridor publishes its rate margin. That makes the fee column unreliable on its own at this size — the only honest comparison is the amount that actually arrives, quoted at the amount you are sending.

What is the cheapest way to send money to India?

Remitly delivers the most money on our benchmark transfer — fee and exchange rate together, which is the comparison that matters. Lowest published fee is a different question, and on most corridors a different answer:

Fees as published by each provider on their own site, checked by hand.

What is the fastest way to send money to India?

Xoom quotes the fastest delivery on this corridor at minutes, and so do WorldRemit, Taptap Send and Ria Money Transfer. Published speeds describe the fastest route a provider offers, not every route: paying by card and sending to a wallet is usually near-instant, while a bank transfer funded by direct debit takes longer whoever you send with.

Before you send to India

  • UPI payout is now offered by six of the ten providers here — Wise, Remitly, Western Union, Xoom, Paysend and Taptap Send — but not by WorldRemit, Ria or MoneyGram on their UK pages. If you want the money in a UPI ID rather than an account number, that choice narrows the field before price does.
  • UPI carries a per-transfer ceiling that several providers publish: Wise and Taptap Send both state 200,000 INR, and Western Union states real-time UPI up to 100,000 INR. Above those limits the transfer falls back to IMPS or NEFT and stops being instant, so a larger transfer is not simply a bigger version of a smaller one.
  • India restricts what a personal remittance may be for. Wise requires a purpose code — education, medical, travel, visiting expenses and similar — and states you cannot transfer to India for investment or charitable donation. Wise will pay into NRE and NRO accounts but will not send from one.
  • Published per-transfer ceilings differ by more than a factor of ten: Ria's UK calculator accepts 1 to 8,000 GBP, WorldRemit allows 8,000 GBP by card but 100,000 GBP by bank transfer, Remitly states up to 75,000 GBP, and Taptap Send states 99,000 GBP. On a large transfer the limit, not the fee, decides who can carry it.
  • Cash pickup is capped low at some providers. Xoom states a maximum payout of 50,000 INR and requires the recipient to bring the transaction number and photo identification.
  • Two different things get called "UPI" here, and the difference is money. What the six providers above offer is paying INTO a UPI ID: the transfer still crosses the border on a conventional rail and is handed to UPI at the Indian end, so you pay conventional pricing for it. A native UPI-to-UPI international link is a separate thing, live in 11 countries — Singapore, the UAE, France, Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Mauritius, Qatar, Cambodia, Greece and the Maldives — and the United Kingdom is not among them, despite being one of India's largest remittance sources. India used Global Fintech Fest in September 2026 to push for more such links precisely because conventional transfers cost senders 3-4%, but no UK timeline has been announced and the only fully two-way link that exists (India-Singapore) took over 18 months to negotiate. Treat UPI payout here as speed and convenience for your recipient, not a discount for you.

What it costs to send money to India

Sending money from the UK to India converts pound sterlings (GBP) into Indian rupees (INR). Most of the real cost is not the headline fee — it is the exchange-rate margin, the gap between your quoted rate and the mid-market rate banks use between themselves. Two providers can both advertise "no fees" and still differ by several percent on what actually arrives.

India's IMPS rail settles instantly around the clock, so bank deposits often land within minutes rather than days.

That is why the comparison above leads with how your recipient can be paid rather than with a headline price: match the service to how they actually want the money, then check the final quote.

How to choose the right provider

01

Compare the amount received, not the fee

Enter the same amount with two or three providers and compare what your recipient in India actually receives in Indian rupees. That one number folds the fee and the rate margin together.

02

Match the payout method to your recipient

In India the common rails are IMPS and NEFT bank deposit. A slightly pricier provider paying into the wallet or account they already use beats a cheaper one that means a trip to an agent.

03

Pay more for speed only when you need it

4 providers here, including WorldRemit, Xoom and Taptap Send, can deliver within minutes, but express usually costs more in fee or margin. If it is not urgent, the economy option on the same platform is often meaningfully cheaper.

04

Check cash pickup coverage before you send

6 providers offer cash pickup in India, including Remitly, WorldRemit and Western Union. Check the specific branch is open and stocked before sending, especially outside major cities.

05

Verify the provider is licensed

Any service moving money out of the UK should be registered with the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA). Everyone we list is — worth checking for any service you find elsewhere.

India corridor insights

Researched figures for this corridor, each linked to its original source.

  1. Wise's published pricing for a 1,000 GBP transfer to India separates the payment method from the transfer: 5.14 GBP by bank transfer or PISP, 8.29 GBP by debit card and 44.14 GBP by credit card. The credit-card figure is more than eight times the bank-transfer one for the same transfer, which is the clearest published statement on this corridor that how you pay costs more than who you send with.

  2. Taptap Send publishes a flat 1.00 GBP fee from the UK in a table that also prices Australia at 1.99 AUD, Canada at 1.99 CAD, the eurozone at 1.99 EUR, the UAE at 5.00 AED and the US at 1.99 USD. It is the only provider on this corridor that states a UK fee as a figure on a published page rather than inside a live quote.

  3. At Global Fintech Fest in Mumbai in September 2026, India's prime minister called for UPI to be linked to more countries' national payment rails specifically to cut remittance costs, noting India receives roughly $135 billion a year and that conventional SWIFT-based transfers cost senders 3-4%. UPI remittance links were live in 11 countries at that point — Singapore, the UAE, France, Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Mauritius, Qatar, Cambodia, Greece and the Maldives — and only the India-Singapore UPI-PayNow corridor offered full two-way interbank linkage.

Sending airtime to India

Airtime top-up loads phone credit straight onto a number in India. It is not money: the recipient cannot withdraw it or spend it anywhere else, and it reaches one phone rather than a bank account or a wallet. It tends to be the right answer when the amount is small and what is actually needed is a working phone — not a substitute for the transfers compared above.

On this corridor the research records WorldRemit as publishing an airtime top-up service alongside the money transfers in the table.

This site does not compare airtime prices. What it records is which providers on this corridor publish the service — the amount, the exchange rate and any fee are set by the provider at checkout, and are not measured here the way transfer costs above are. Using a link costs you nothing and never affects what we rank or write.

Frequently Asked Questions

Measured on the full cost — the transfer fee plus the exchange-rate margin — Wise is cheapest on this corridor at £1,000, across the 3 providers we hold checked figures for. Remitly, Revolut and Ria Money Transfer advertise no transfer fee here, which looks cheaper and often is not: a provider with no fee recovers it in the rate, and the margin is usually the larger of the two costs. The cheapest provider also changes with the amount you send, so compare the final sum that arrives in Indian rupees rather than the headline fee.

At £1,000, Wise is the cheapest of the 3 providers priced at that amount on this corridor: about £5.14 all in, or 0.51% of the amount sent. Western Union is next at about £6.19. That is the fee plus the exchange-rate margin that applied to a transfer of that size — priced at £1,000 specifically, not worked out from a measurement taken at some other amount. It covers a bank transfer; cash pickup and mobile wallet payouts are priced separately. The margins were measured by Wise's comparison service rather than published by the providers themselves, and other providers here may be cheaper and are not priced this way.

Yes. Up to £2,500, Wise costs least on this corridor; from £5,000 upwards, Western Union does. The change happens somewhere between those two amounts — they are the amounts actually priced, so naming a precise crossing point would be a guess dressed as a figure. This happens because a transfer costs a flat fee plus a percentage of the amount, and those two scale in opposite directions: on a small transfer the fee dominates, on a large one the exchange-rate margin does. It is why a comparison taken at a single amount can point you at the wrong provider for yours.

Delivery ranges from minutes to a few business days depending on the provider and payout method. WorldRemit, Xoom, Taptap Send and Ria Money Transfer can deliver within minutes when you pay by debit card. Bank-funded and economy transfers typically take one to three business days but usually cost less. Transfers sent outside banking hours or over a weekend may not settle until the next working day.

Across the providers we compare, the available payout methods are UPI, bank deposit, cash pickup, mobile wallet and airtime top-up. The most widely used options in India are IMPS and NEFT bank deposit. India's IMPS rail settles instantly around the clock, so bank deposits often land within minutes rather than days. Not every provider supports every method, so check the table above before you commit.

No. Remitly, WorldRemit, Western Union, Xoom, Ria Money Transfer and MoneyGram offer cash pickup in India, so your recipient can collect the funds with valid photo ID and the transfer reference number. That said, IMPS and NEFT bank deposit generally cost less than cash collection.

Providers rarely give you the mid-market rate — the reference rate you see on Google or Reuters. Instead they add a margin, typically between 0.4% and 4%, and keep the difference. That margin is often larger than the visible transfer fee, which is why a "no fee" service can still be more expensive overall. For GBP to INR, compare the quoted rate against the mid-market rate to see the real spread you are paying.

Yes, provided you use a licensed provider. Every service listed on this page is regulated in the UK under the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), which requires safeguarding of customer funds and identity verification. Send only to people you know personally, keep your transfer reference private, and be sceptical of anyone pressuring you to send money urgently to someone you have not met.

Yes. Each provider sets its own transfer limits, which vary by how much identity verification you have completed and how you pay. Larger transfers may require additional documentation such as proof of source of funds. For transfers above roughly £10,000, a specialist foreign-exchange broker will often beat an app on rate.
