What it costs has two parts: the advertised fee, and the exchange-rate margin kept by paying your recipient less than the mid-market rate. The margin is usually the larger, and is never labelled as a fee. Figures are each provider’s published terms — open a provider for a live quote.
Too few checked amounts on this corridor to rank by money, so the order is payout coverage, delivery speed and published fees — a provider with a checked figure is not placed above one without. Affiliate arrangements never affect this order.
No labels are awarded on this corridor. With 4 providers the table is the comparison, and calling one of them best of 4 would dress a short list up as a finding.
Where two providers tie, the one supporting more payout types is listed first, then the faster one, then alphabetically. A label is left unawarded whenever the data we hold cannot support it — we would rather show fewer claims than invented ones. No provider on this corridor publishes its exchange rate in advance, so no Best value is named here. Full methodology
Independent — providers cannot pay for placement or ranking · Consistent — every checked amount measured on the same corridor at the same send amount, and any fee quoted on a different basis says so on its own row · Transparent — the advertised fee kept separate from the rate margin

What is the fastest way to send money to Somalia?
Dahabshiil quotes the fastest delivery on this corridor at minutes, and so does WorldRemit. Published speeds describe the fastest route a provider offers, not every route: paying by card and sending to a wallet is usually near-instant, while a bank transfer funded by direct debit takes longer whoever you send with.

Before you send to Somalia
- US banks have historically closed accounts belonging to Somali money transfer operators over compliance concerns — a pattern known as de-risking. The World Bank has argued the typical $100-300 transfer represents low actual laundering risk relative to the compliance burden imposed. The practical effect is a narrower provider field here than on comparable African corridors.
- Mobile money is the dominant rail. Hormuud's EVC Plus alone accounts for the large majority of Somali mobile-money users, and wallet delivery is generally faster and more reliable than cash collection outside the main cities.
- A 1% US federal excise tax applies to remittance transfers funded with cash, a money order or a cashier's check, effective January 2026. Transfers funded from a bank account, debit card or credit card are not subject to it — so how you pay can change the total cost.
- The Western Union row here is sourced from the World Bank's Remittance Prices Worldwide database rather than from Western Union's own published page, so it does not meet this site's bar for a verified row. Western Union's US corridor page returned 403 on re-check, so it could not be confirmed directly.
- If you're sending from Hennepin or Ramsey County, Minnesota (home to the largest Somali-American community in the US), a FinCEN Geographic Targeting Order first took effect 12 February 2026 and was renewed in August 2026: banks and money transmitters there must report outbound transfers of $3,000 or more to FinCEN, collect extra beneficiary details (date of birth, phone, email), and in some cases require a government source-of-funds certification. It followed Treasury claims of fraud in federal safety-net programs, which reporting has described as unsubstantiated. This is a reporting and paperwork requirement on the sending institution, not a ban — but expect extra questions and delay on a transfer near or above that threshold from those two counties specifically.
More on the 1% tax — who owes it, when it applies, and how the funding method changes it: US remittance tax.
What it costs to send money to Somalia
Sending money from the USA to Somalia converts US dollars (USD) into Somali shillings (SOS). Most of the real cost is not the headline fee — it is the exchange-rate margin, the gap between your quoted rate and the mid-market rate banks use between themselves. Two providers can both advertise "no fees" and still differ by several percent on what actually arrives.
Mobile money is the default in Somalia and reaches far more people than banking — wallet delivery is usually faster and more reliable than cash collection outside the main cities.
That is why the comparison above leads with how your recipient can be paid rather than with a headline price: match the service to how they actually want the money, then check the final quote.
How to choose the right provider
Compare the amount received, not the fee
Enter the same amount with two or three providers and compare what your recipient in Somalia actually receives in Somali shillings. That one number folds the fee and the rate margin together.
Match the payout method to your recipient
In Somalia the common rails are the EVC Plus, Sahal and Premier mobile wallets, plus cash pickup. A slightly pricier provider paying into the wallet or account they already use beats a cheaper one that means a trip to an agent.
Pay more for speed only when you need it
WorldRemit and Dahabshiil can deliver within minutes, but express usually costs more in fee or margin. If it is not urgent, the economy option on the same platform is often meaningfully cheaper.
Check cash pickup coverage before you send
4 providers offer cash pickup in Somalia, including Western Union, Remitly and WorldRemit. Check the specific branch is open and stocked before sending, especially outside major cities.
Verify the provider is licensed
Any service moving money out of the USA should be registered with FinCEN and state money-transmitter licences. Everyone we list is — worth checking for any service you find elsewhere.
Somalia corridor insights
Researched figures for this corridor, each linked to its original source.
Somalis abroad sent home an estimated $1.7 billion in 2023 — more than Somalia's entire government budget that year, and more than the roughly $1.1 billion it received in international aid.
The New Humanitarian · 2023
Roughly 40% of Somali households receive remittances, making diaspora transfers a mainstream household income source rather than an occasional supplement.
The New Humanitarian · 2025
The average cost of sending $200 from the USA to Somalia was 5.60% ($11.20) — below the 6.36% global average and well below the 8.46% Sub-Saharan Africa average, with Western Union cheapest at $8.00 in that sampling.
World Bank Remittance Prices Worldwide · Q3 2025
Mobile money penetration in Somalia is among the highest in the world, with an estimated 73% of Somalis aged 16 and over using it — driven partly by deep distrust of physical shilling notes.
The New Humanitarian, citing World Bank · 2017 estimate
Separately from the 1% federal remittance excise tax that took effect 1 January 2026, a FinCEN Geographic Targeting Order covering Hennepin and Ramsey County, Minnesota took effect 12 February 2026 and was renewed in August 2026, requiring banks and money transmitters there to report outbound international transfers of $3,000+ and collect additional beneficiary and source-of-funds information. It followed Treasury fraud claims involving federal safety-net programs that reporting has called unsubstantiated.
